5 Easy plastic-free swaps

Every time I share that I use a shampoo bar, I am met with confused looks or maybe even they think its gross. But how can it be; it is a self cleaning system and the best part is that it's zero waste!

Today I am rounding up some easy swaps that you could make to replace plastic from your life. And I promise, it will not be an inconvenience to use.

  1. Bamboo toothbrush

Every single toothbrush ever made is still on this planet and it will remain here for years and years to come (that just blows my mind!) Bamboo on the other hand can be thrown in your compost pile and it will disintegrate. Even our kids use bamboo toothbrushes! You can find them here.

2. Shampoo and soap bars

Imagine the number of shampoo and body soap bottles that will be prevented from going in the landfill by this simple swap. I enjoy the shampoo bars from Lush Cosmetics.

3. Laundry and dishwashing detergent in cardboard boxes

Same reasoning, reduce the number of plastic containers going to landfill. Tide and Seventh Generation has powder detergent.

4. Reusable containers

This could be your water-bottle or a glass/stainless steel/Tupperware containers instead of a ziplock bags and saran wraps.

Reach for something that can be used over and over instead of single-use; even if it is a plastic container.

5. BYOB (Bring your own bags)!

For groceries and your other shopping needs. This one is the easiest!

With all this said, I'd encourage you to do your own research. Also, I am not asking you to go out and buy new stuff. Replenish with plastic free alternatives as needed but I urge you to use up what you have - that's the best use you could get out of any product.

I get it, we cannot entirely ditch plastic. I used to work in a genetics lab, plastic has a place there. All the scientific research and innovation would not have been possible without the use of this material and I am sure it plays a significant role in other industries as well. But as for everyday single use plastics, we can be more mindful. If there's an alternative (to plastic) you can slowly integrate in your routine, now wouldn't that be a nice thing to do for the environment and for the future generations.
